Maar julle manne is skerp!
Die Addax (wit bokke)
The addax is a critically endangered species of antelope, as classified by the IUCN. Although extremely rare in its native habitat due to unregulated hunting, it is quite common in captivity. The addax was once abundant in North Africa, native to Chad, Mauritania and Niger. It is extinct in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Sudan and Western Sahara. It has been reintroduced in Morocco and Tunisia.
Die Hirola (middel foto)
One of the world's rarest antelope now has a new home in Marasabit. The Kenya Wildlife Service and the Northern Rangeland Trust have successfully introduced the rare species of the antelope - the hirola - to a sanctuary in Ishaqbini. The hirola is the world's most endangered antelope having rapidly declined from roughly 14,000 in the 1970s to just about 430 today. It is only found in small pockets of bushland in Kenya and Somalia. It is also said that it is likely to be the first mammal to become extinct in Africa in modern history if steps are not taken protect it.
Die Gerenuk
The gerenuk is less sociable than most other gazelles, a behaviour consistent with its semiclosed habitat preference and low population density—overall average of 0.05 per square km (0.13 per square mile) but 0.5 per square km (1.3 per square mile) where common, as in the drier bush country of northern Kenya and Somalia. Sightings of single animals, not only males but also adult females, are typical. Herds of two to eight are considered normal at relatively high densities, while herds of more than a dozen are unusual.
