Ek sal more tannie Hettie bel en hoor oor die begrafnis sake, sal ook hoor of daar begrafnis polis is en of blomme en dinge reeds gedek is, en of sy enige ander bydrae nodig het.. Indien alles gedek is sal ek vir haar n boek koop, kaartjie en die res gee as n klein kontant skenking.

Almal gelukkig daarmee??

Nee maggies ek het dan net 'n week of twee terug nog met hom gesels, hy't my met 'n penarie gehelp. Nee man. Ek weet nie wat om te dink nie. Hy het altyd so bereidwillig gehelp en gedeel en was 'n aanwins nie net tot die forum nie, maar tot die wêreld in geheel. Ek sit met 'n traan in my oog.

Sjoe, dis 'n groot skok. Weet ons wat het met hom gebeur?

Baie groot skok om dit te lees, as daar nou een persoon was wat altyd net rustig kon antwoord en ook alles geantwoord het wat hy kon was dit oom Marius. Altyd gewilig om iemand te help maak nie saak of dit 'n onnodige vraag was nie.

Dit is amper of ons 'n groot deel van Jaracal verloor het inige simpatie met sy familie en rus in vrede oom, dankie vir alles.

Dit is die absoluute waarheid Frederik, Oom Marius jy gaan verseker gemis word RIV Oom.

Marius van Rooyen was a man amongst men. Intelligent, respectful, knowledgeable, funny, great friend and just a wonderful human being.

I first met Marius on this Forum where he appeared to be the resident Quick Load guru. In the beginning he mentored me and we shared lots of information. I had contact with Chris Long the founder of the OBT theory, we would share information and explanations that Chris offered that supported Quick Load as a useful reloading tool. We were both QL disciples.

We chatted regularly, he found out I lived in Brackenhurst, he lived in Vereeniging, so we arranged to meet on the side of the road. Either I had something to give him, or he has something for me. I felt very comfortable in his company and he in mine. In the early days we chatted almost daily on gun related matters sometimes multiple times a day.

I had been prepping to take two of my grandsons on a hunt, they had practiced and were all good to go, but I felt that my presence may make them overly nervous as may try overly hard to please grandad or pops as they call me. I had no hesitation in asking Marius to take the elder grandson and my mate Charl who had been helping the younger one. I was eternally grateful that Marius was there to assist me in the development of my grandsons.

We had a long drive to Inkonka Farm out Tzaneen way. Marius calming manner had a wonderful impact on Travis who was completely at home in his company, he looked forward to the hunt. The hunting was tough, but Travis got his penkoppie and was extremely chuffed. Ayden too got his penkoppie and was equally pleased. The conversation around the fire was wonderful and was adapted for our young hunters to gently introduce them into the men’s chat around the fire and wonderful hunting stories.

At some point along the way one of their regular shooting party declined a hunt, and Marius asked if I would care to join. I was grateful, and we had our first hunt on Kortdraai Farm out near Vivo. Marius had surrounded himself with equally wonderful men who all shared the same outlook in life, the same outlook I too shared. It was wonderful and I felt right at home immediately.

It was on the way there that I really started to get to know Marius. He was a wonderful storyteller and had a very engaging manner about him. Professionally he was a Land Surveyor who had his own practice, a two-man business that would eventually morph into a one-man and one-woman business as his wife Hettie joined him as assistant in the field. He enjoyed that. Marius career had taken him to some weird and wonderful places, and he would tell me about all these journeys. All his hunts were also related in great detail, but the detail never got boring, you became captured by it.

In all our trips together 5 and 6 hours each way, we never ran out of interesting subject matter. Conversations were enlightening and enjoyable.

At the end of the first hunt, I was unanimously accepted as part of the hunting group for which I was overjoyed. There was Marius, Hennie the Kamp Kommandant, Barry, Johan and then the sons would appear from time to time and then with their sons. I was delighted to be in such wonderful company.

Marius’ culinary boast was that he would provide the salad for the hunt, we need not worry. As a salad lover I was delighted to hear this. It turns out his salad was a tin of Koo mixed vegetables doused with Mayonnaise. This turns out to be possibly his only weakness.

Marius was walking fit due to his job, we always tended to walk and stalk, bakkie hunt was not for us. Or we would wait at select spots waiting for the game to come walking by. While waiting he would unpack this shooting stool that had a small pouch in it. He ALWAYS had oranges in it and he would patiently peel and eat his orange or two as we waited for the game. It was a ritual with him. As was his love for Tafel Laager and later in the evening Red Wine. Marius was not scared of a drink or two but was always responsible, never became rowdy or offensive. He might nod off in his chair around the campfire but was always just Marius.

Marius was a large spirit in the Jaracal forum as well as Gunsite, of which I too was a member and over time became less involved, this was true for Jaracal as well. Marius was highly respected in the communities, and rightfully so.

Four years ago, we relocated from Alberton to Gansbaai on the Cape West Coast. We still spoke regularly and maintained contact. Our last conversation I invited them to come stay for some time, and get to know the Western Cape. Barry our hunting buddy had also relocated to Kleinmond and Hennie was in Stilbaai or surrounds, so a reunion was on the cards. Sadly, we never got to have that reunion.

Marius was only 72 when he passed. He might have got his biblical three score and 10 years, but we dearly needed to have him around for longer.

So farewell my friend, you were indeed a true friend, never judgmental, always supportive and always the same. You will be sorely missed in the shooting fraternity, by your hunting buddies and naturally by your beloved wife Hettie and son.

I cannot convey who Marius really was in a forum post but hope that this gives those who never knew him intimately, some insight into the man we called friend.

May you rest in the peace that surrounded you, go softly my friend. Until we meet again, I will think fondly about you.
