*FURTHER NEWS ON RIFLEX PROPELLANTS.*

I spent an hour on the phone today with Kobus du Plessis, well known ballistics expert and manufacturer of Impala Bullets.

His information about disposal of ammunition knocked my belief of first information out my sails.

Firstly: PMP does not dispose old army ammo, as I have heard. The SANDF does. But they are not allowed to sell army ammo, unless it is discontinued, like our .303 ammo. With current ammo, like the 7.62x51 ammo, they have to strip the ammo before they can sell the components, through Armscor. Sometimes, the timex ammo can be up to a million or more rounds at a time: SANDF and SAPS are main users of 7.62. Ammo life in the force is 10years. Thereafter they have to re-proof for themselves the ammo once a year. I think after 20years they have to dispose old ammo, although the life of packed propellant is 40 years. The shellac they use protects the propellant in loaded cases.

So, if Riflex’s distributers claim that the origin of the propellants is the NXCO mining community, we have to understand that they, NXCO, bought the propellant for rock breaking. They pack the proppelant into cartridges not very different from shotgun ammo, but in all different sizes akin to Bore sizes. Their stores are most probably located at AEC Pelindaba. Not great big unprotected sheds, as had been told to me, but airtight bunkers, because we are talking about tons and tons of propellants.

Then, a few old Armscor and other industry players saw the opportunity to aid the Covid-affected faltering of the reloading community.

So, then, in step they who understand these things: let’s make better use of these propellents and pack it manageable containers and sell it at reduced rates, relative to any imported products.

It was well known to them that the propellants in question were S341 and S321. Therefore they knew that these two propellants made up the bulk of Somchem’s sales for the SANDF and SAPS. This is what they sell to us. Kobus says he will definately buy a can or more and load it. According to him, it is a gain for any reloader of medium calibres like these guys from Riflex advertise: if they claim we can use the Somchem tables for S321 and S341, then it is S321 and S341. That is the way old ammo is de-commissioned. Lot by lot: Configuration Management always in place.

I therefore apologise to you for discouraging the use of Riflex. I was influenced by someone who thought he had all the facts.
