OAL (Overall length) - explained in detail -
I've found a number of shooters that reload who
are looking to find a more complete explanation of
the term "overall length" (OAL) and how to find the
best length for their handloads. Reloading manuals
always record a particular OAL for each bullet they
list. However this is only a small part of the story.
It's pretty rare to see different bullet types or different
bullet weights that are listed with the same OAL.
This is due to the unique curve (ogive) along the side
of each bullet. Reloading manuals recommend
specific OAL dimensions according to the industry
standard (SAAMI spec.). Those loads have been
tested to be safe at that particular overall length, and
they should always fit in your magazine. Finding the
exact "optimum" length requires a bit more
information than most reloading manuals provide.
Factory ammo is also made according to the
industry standard (SAAMI spec.) for the same
reasons. As a result, their bullets are often seated into the case at least .100"
deeper than necessary. Some rifles (especially Weatherby Magnums) have well
over .250" of free-bore to the rifling. They do this to safely reach the highest
velocity possible. On production rifles, it usually works out that if you seat your
bullets closer to the rifling, your cartridges will be too long to fit in your magazine.
Finding the optimum OAL for maximum accuracy requires you to reduce the
distance that the bullet travels before it contacts the rifling. This also helps
maintain concentric alignment between bullet and the bore. That's why your
accuracy improves. If you're looking for better accuracy, your bullet needs to be
well aligned as it starts down the barrel.
Setting the OAL correctly for your "particular" chamber is the cheapest
accuracy improvement there is. However, increasing the OAL also increases
chamber pressure. To understand why chamber pressure is increased, think
about this example of momentum. A car can easily drive over a curb with a little
running start; but when you are parked right up against the same curb, and you
step on the gas - it requires a lot more force to start moving. It's easy to
understand why seating your bullet farther out to contact the rifling increases your
chamber pressure. When we increase the OAL, we have to work up loads with
extra caution, and expect that as OAL increases, your chamber pressure will also
increase. Experienced shooters know that this is one of the most important steps
for improving rifle accuracy. The optimum length of accurate handloads will
always be quite a bit longer than comparable factory loads. Finding the optimum
OAL always improves rifle accuracy.
We have to remember that the tip of the
bullet is not what contacts the barrel. Actual
contact with the rifling occurs somewhere along
the ogive of the bullet, so that's where the OAL
measurement needs to be made. Shooters use
several different techniques to accurately
measure from the base of the case to the bullet
ogive. A few years ago, Stoney Point designed
a popular tool that does a good job of making
this measurement. The picture at the right
shows a special tool that I made to determine the
exact OAL measurement. This length
measurement should be based on where the
bullet contacts the rifling. I have one of these
modified cases for each rifle caliber that I reload.
Just take a resized case and cut 3 or 4 slots in
the neck. This is an easy project with a Dremel
tool using a cut-off disk. This makes a great
chamber length gauge that will grip a bullet with
just enough tension to hold it in place. This
becomes an OAL gauge for one specific caliber
using one particular bullet.
With the test bullet seated in my "split case
tool", simply insert the round into your chamber. The rifling will push the bullet
deeper into the case. Then carefully extract the round without disturbing the bullet.
After this gizmo is extracted, you can measure it from the base to the bullet ogive.
It's important to use calipers and another special tool (described below) to get an
accurate measurement of this tool. I have used the Stoney Point tool, and it works
very well. However, I still prefer using my "split case tool" to do the same thing.
This handy tool is also used for adjusting the seating depth of your dies and
comparing to the OAL of your completed handloads.

purpose of the device is to
provide a consistently accurate
measurement from the "ogive" of
each bullet to the cartridge base.
Due to the irregular point on
most bullets, you should not try to
measure the overall length to the tip of the bullets, or you will get a variety of
different readings. Except for a good magazine fit, the total length is not important.
It is important to accurately measure the overall length of your cartridges from the
ogive, because this is how you determine the best seating depth and OAL.
Keep in mind that throat erosion will cause your OAL to increase as the throat
begins to wear. Magnum calibers (and several other hot cartridges) usually cause
considerable erosion after firing just a few rounds in a new barrel, but that wear will
slow down a bit after the barrel is broken in. When testing handload accuracy with
hunting rifles, start experimenting with the longest OAL that will fit in your
magazine. Then start making your handloads in .003" shorter increments until you
find the OAL that shoots best. I usually settle on the longest combination that will
shoot well and fit in the magazine. If you are seeking extreme accuracy, you
should start .001" behind the rifling and try reducing the OAL in .003" increments,
until you come up with the most accurate load. I always avoid seating the bullet
long enough to contact the rifling, because eventually you will extract a loaded
round, and you'll find that you have a bullet stuck in the rifling. You'll become
aware of this as your case pulls away from the bullet, and powder spills all over the
place.
Give this a try and see how much your accuracy improves. It's real rewarding
to see your groups tighten up, without even spending a dime to get it. Maximum
accuracy is only possible after you've found the optimum OAL for your particular
chamber.

As jy dit nou verstaan kan jy sien waar gaan ons met Quickload en Optmal Barreltime tabelle heen gaan om dit wiskundig te bepaal en sodoende baie minder skote te skiet en geld te spaar.

WHAT IS AN OPTIMAL CHARGE WEIGHT
LOAD?

With any given bullet and powder combination, there
will be a specific amount of that powder which will
cause the bullet to exit the muzzle at the "friendliest"
portion of the vibration cycle. This does not necessarily
correspond with the tightest velocity figures, however.

Many load recipes have over the years become the "go
to" recipes for trying out a new rifle. If your rifle fails to
shoot one of these "tried and true" recipes well, you may
well have a rifle integrity problem.

Consider the Federal Gold Medal Match .308 win ammo.
How can one recipe shoot so well in so many rifles?
That's what we're after in the OCW load--a load recipe so
stable and predictable that it does indeed rise above,
and to some extent disprove the "all rifles are different" adage of lore...

Think about it this way.  Some kids like mashed potatos, some don't.  Some kids will eat thier peas, some won't.  Some kids like bananas, some hate 'em.  But show me a kid that doesn't like chocolate ice cream and I'll show you one bizarre little character! :)  An OCW load is like chocolate ice cream to your rifle.  If your rifle doesn't like the recipe, there is likely something weird about your rifle.

If you perform the OCW load development properly,
you are not (in the initial stages) seeking the optimal
load for the test rifle. Heresy? Not really. There are
many known "universal recipes" that work well in most
rifles chambered for them. Ken Waters has made a pretty
penny with his book "Pet Loads" on this concept. Many
of the Waters loads have worked beautifully in my rifles,
and acquaintances have had the same experience.
Federal's Gold Medal Match .308 loads do well in
practically any .308 not needing a gunsmith's attention.
How can this be? If you subscribe to the philosophy that
"all rifles are different," and therefore need individual
loads tailored to accommodate their idiosyncrasies, how
do you explain the near universal MOA performance of
loads such as the Federal GMM? Universally good
recipes do exist. Upon realizing this, my questions have
been "How do such recipes work?" and "How can I
develop such a load?"

Recent conversations with very learned mechanical
engineers are affording me some better understanding of
just why an OCW load works so well in the majority of
rifles chambered for the cartridge at hand.
Here are some of the major points coming to light:
Uniformity of velocity (meaning low extreme spreads of
velocity) are definitely not an indicator of the OCW
zone. We are actually finding that in many cases the
OCW zone does not have the tightest numbers--at least
initially. Fine tuning of the recipe with seating depth
variations and primer changes will improve the velocity
consistency, but simply shooting a succession of
graduated charges over the chronograph and looking for
a tight velocity spread will not lead you to the OCW.

As the reader comes to understand more about the main
shock wave (link Chris Long's pages elsewhere in this
webpage) it will become easier to understand how
bullets with larger extreme spreads in velocity can still
group tight (at closer ranges), while bullets with
seemingly tiny extreme spreads may group poorly. You
can tighten the extreme spread to improve long range
accuracy AFTER you identify the OCW.

Engineer Chris Long's model of barrel
behavior suggests (simply put, and in part)
that the initial shock wave, generated by the powder
charge's ignition, travels at the speed of sound in
steel (about 18.000 fps) from the chamber to the muzzle, then back, in a repeated pattern. When this wave is present at the muzzle, there is
naturally much turbulence and obturation of the
"roundness" of the bore at the muzzle. However, when
this main shock wave has reverberated back to the
chamber end, the muzzle is relatively stable. This
window of opportunity, according to Chris, is the best
time for the bullet to exit the muzzle. The barrel is
basically straight, and relatively calm.
(Read later about the "scatter node" which is the point
at which the bullets are being released from the bore
when the shock wave is at the muzzle. I call this area
the "scatter node" because it will produce a scattered group,
throwing flyers at random.  This is the most
inopportune point of all for bullet release, the scatter node area
can be easily seen during an OCW test, and generally 1 to 2
powder graduations above the scatter node charge will have
you right in the OCW zone.  The existence of the scatter node
is the main reason the conventional ladder (Audette) test often fails
to yield useful results--see OCW vs. Ladder on this site).

The OCW load would then have the optimal amount of
powder to push the bullet at just the right speed to be
exiting the muzzle when this shock wave is at the other
end (the chamber end) of the barrel.
This shock wave travels at the same speed regardless of
barrel length or girth (about 18,000 fps).
We note that OCW loads seem to perform very well
regardless of barrel length. (We're not considering non-
typical barrel lengths here). This makes sense because
the relationship between barrel time (the length of time it
takes the bullet to exit the muzzle) and the oscillating
shock wave is close to the same; in other words, in a short
barrel the shock wave reaches the muzzle and returns to
the chamber faster, but alas, the bullet reaches and exits
the muzzle faster also.
The harmonics which ride the main vibration node are
only of minor importance to accuracy in most cases. It
would appear that the effects of the subtle harmonic
vibrations can be largely negated with seating depth
adjustments, but a true OCW load will normally be
MOA or better in a good rifle without seating depth
Tuning.
Instructions on how to do OCW
1. Decide on the bullet you want to use.

2. Choose a powder. This is probably the most important step in the whole process. As a rule, you should choose the slowest burning powder practical. There seem to be plenty of exceptions here, so if you have it on good authority that a slightly faster powder works well with the bullet/cartridge combo you're using, feel free to choose that powder. A couple of examples would be IMR 4350 in the 30-06 and IMR 3031 in the .243 Winchester. An aside: When in doubt, consult the Nosler manual for their "most accurate powder tested." That powder nearly always gives good results in the application listed.

3. Consult at least three load data sources for maximum charge weight for the powder you've selected. Powder manufacturers are the most reliable source. You must then decide on what your maximum charge will be.

4. Back away from the maximum charge by 7 to 10 percent, and load one test round with this charge. Add 2% to the charge weight, and load another cartridge with that charge. Load a third test cartridge with the next 2% graduation. You will use these three cartridges for sighters, and more importantly to determine pressure tolerance in your individual rifle.

5. Add another 2% or so to the charge level used in cartridge #3 of step 4, and load three rounds with this charge weight. Add .7% to 1% to this charge, and load three more. Add that same graduation again, and load three more. Continue adding the chosen graduation until you have moved ONE increment above your chosen maximum powder charge.

6. The seating depth for all test loads should of course be the same. I normally seat the bullet a caliber's depth into the case, or to magazine length--whichever is shorter. I don't believe loading to approach the lands is necessary, or even desirable in most situations. So long as the bullets are seated straight, with as little runout as possible, the advantages of loading close to the lands are largely over-stated. This said, be certain that the seating depth you choose does not cram the bullet into the lands. Stay at least .020" or so off the lands for these excercises.

7. The primer brand you choose is entirely up to you. Use magnum primers only with magnum chamberings, as their added pressure may distort the OCW conclusions on standard chamberings. One exeption here would be with low density loads, as I believe that magnum primers improve ignition consistency in loads where the powder only fills 85 percent or less of the case.

8. At the range, you should set up 5 to 7 targets at 100 yards. The number of targets you use will depend on how many "sets" of cartridges you loaded. Be sure the targets are identical, and level. I like to use a simple black square, drawn on a white background with a large felt tip marker. I draw the square about 3/4" (interior dimension) for my 9 power scope setting. This allows a "tight fit" of the crosshairs in the square, and thus a repeatable sight picture. For higher power scopes, draw the square smaller, and vice versa.

9. You can also put up one "sighter" target, and use the initial reduced rounds to get the POI on paper, as close to the bullseye as possible.

10. Your barrel should of course be clean before starting. Depending on the number of rounds you will fire, you may decide that it is necessary to clean half way through the string, fire a couple foulers, and allow a couple of minutes to cool before continuing. With custom barrels, you may be able to fire 25 shots or more before fouling begins spoiling group sizes. With factory barrels, I wouldn't fire more than 15 to 18 shots before cleaning... This is all relative, of course.

11. After you have fired the sighters and confirmed that there are no pressure signs (hard bolt lift, flattened primers, etc.) you allow the barrel to cool for an adequate amount of time (use common sense--the hotter it is outside, the longer it will need to cool) you will then fire your first shot from the first group of the graduated charges. You fire this shot at target number 1.

12. Allow the barrel to cool, then fire a shot from the second graduation at target number 2. Wait for cooling of the barrel, then fire a shot from the third graduation at target number 3. Continue this "round robin" sequence until you have been through all of the targets three times. At this point you will have a three shot group on each of the targets.

13. It is assumed that you are an experienced reloader, and that you know to watch for pressure signs on each of the increasing charges. Fire the subsequent charge only if there are no pressure signs on the previous charge. You can safely fire the heaviest charge you loaded so long as the next charge under it showed no pressure signs. This "heaviest charge" should be about 1% over your selected maximum charge, but will be safe so long as the next lowest graduation showed no pressure signs.

14. Triangulate the groups. This means to connect all three shots in a triangular form, and determine the center of the group, and plot that point on the target. Measure this point's distance and direction from the bullseye, and record the information somewhere on the target. Do this for all of the targets. If you have a called flyer, you should discount that shot, or replace it in the group if you have an additional round loaded with that charge.

15. You will now look for the three groups which come the closest to hitting the same POI (point of impact) on the targets. The trend of the groups should be obvious, normally going from low and favoring one side, to high and favoring the other side. But along the progression, there should be a string of at least three groups that all hit the target in the same relative point.

16. After you have carefully measured group sizes and distances and directions from the bullseye, you will know which three groups come the closest to hitting the target in the same POI. You now choose the powder charge which represents the center of this string. For example, if 34.7, 35.0, and 35.3 grains all grouped about 1.5 inches high, and about 3/4 of an inch right of the bullseye, you would choose the 35.0 grain charge as your OCW (optimal charge weight). This charge will allow 34.7 and 35.3 grain charges to group right with it. This will be a very "pressure tolerant" or "resilient" load.

17. Remember, don't get "bowled over" by a tiny group which falls outside the OCW zone. You can tune any of the groups to be tiny with bullet seating depth changes. After you have determined the OCW, you may want to try seating the bullets deeper or longer in .010" increments to see where your particular rifle does its best. I have often found that OCW recipes are so reliable that seating depth alterations--especially for hunting cartridges--often don't seem necessary.

18. Your next step would be to confirm your load recipe at the maximum range you will expect to use it. Load one round about 1% below, and another round about 1% above the OCW charge, and fire a three shot group with these two charges plus the standard charge at the maximum range you will require the load to be accurate at. You should note MOA, or very close to MOA grouping...

19. The OCW load development plan works best with rifles and shooters that are actually capable of MOA accuracy. If your rifle has not shown a propensity for reasonable accuracy, you may want to have it corrected before wasting time and material with additional load developement. If you are not confident that you are at a level where you can shoot consistent MOA groups, you may want to hold off on intricate load development until your skills are better honed. Lots of practice with a scoped .22 LR is invaluable...

20. I would sincerely recommend using shooting glasses during the firing sequences of ANY load testing. You can never be too careful here... And please know that anytime you embark on load development, you're basically on your own. Just like any provider of load data or development instructions, I must mention that I accept no responsibility whatsoever for any occurrences which are outside the realm of your expectations...

If you are new to the OCW load development concept, it may help if I share with you an example of how it is done:

Some while ago, I developed a varmint load for a Remington 788 I owned in .243 Wincheter. The bullet was the Sierra 60 grain HP, and the powder used was IMR 3031. Primers were the CCI 200's, and brass was all twice fired Winchester.

In checking three loading data sources, I noted that 39 to 41 grains of IMR 3031 was the max charge zone for that powder with 60 grain bullets in the .243. I have found that the best loads for all of my own rifles have been loads that were at or near listed maximums, but I do test about 5 per cent below for pressure signs, then work up.

I began with three rounds each of five different charges, graduating in .3 grain increments. The tested charges were 39.2, 39.5, 39.8, 40.1, and 40.4 grains.

I cleaned the rifle, and shot two fouling shots and allowed two minutes for it to cool. I had five targets posted at 100 yards, one target for each charge variation.

I shot one round of the 39.2 grain charge at target 1, allowed two minutes for cooling, and then fired one shot of the 39.5 grain charge at target 2, cooled, one shot of the 39.8 grain charge at target 3, cooled, you get the idea...

This is basically a "round robin" system of grouping each charge, which precludes disadvantaging late groups due to fouling, or heat build up.

When finished, I had three shots on each of the five targets, BUT (!)... I don't look for the tightest group of the five and call that my load.

Here's what I do instead, and I'll explain why later: I look for the three groups of the five that come the closest to hitting the target in the same position. I noted that in this case, the three groups from the middle of the string were the ones which happened to hit the same POI, (all within about a 3/4" overlay, and all at a 2 o'clock position with relation to the bull) with the 39.2 grain group hitting low and left from that common POI by an inch. The 40.4 grain charge, in addition to moving high and right of the common POI for the three center charges, opened up in size to about 7/8". The 39.2 grain charge shot just under 1/2", but as I said, it wasn't near the common POI that the 39.5, 39.8, and 40.1 charges shared.

So I concluded that the best charge for this application was 39.8 grains of IMR 3031. This was the charge that would allow 39.5 grain charges and 40.1 grain charges to group right with it.

Why would I want that?

Well, variations in brass cases, powder lots, outside temperature--and other things can cause your load to increase or decrease in pressure. With the OCW load, you're covered for a significant amount of pressure differences that may come into play. If I'd gone with the 39.2 grain charge (the sub 1/2" group), a *slight* rise in pressure, brought on by an odd brass case or a hot day, etc., would have resulted in a 1 MOA deviation high and right of my POA.

I shot a 1.5" group at 300 yards with my .308 load with the 168 grain Sierra Matchking using one shot of 43.3 grains IMR 4895, one of 43.6 grains, and the third shot in the 1.5" group was charged with 43.9 grains. (The OCW being 43.6 grains, of course).

























A group fired with my 30-06 at 335 yards consisted of loads all charged with 57.5 grains of H4350 pushing Sierra 165 grain Gamekings. One shot used a Remington brass case with CCI 200 primer, another used a Winchester case with that same primer, and the last load in the three shot group used a Winchester nickel case with a CCI BR primer. All three shots of this mis-matched trio came in at 2/3 MOA at 335 yards. (Update, I've since repeated this test for a five shot group consisting of two Remington cased loads, two Winchester nickel cased loads, and one brass cased Winchester load. Again with CCI BR and CCI 200 primers--again, the group broke 2/3 MOA. A point of interest, the Remington cases weighed ten grains more than the Winchesters. But that wasn't enough difference to take the group outside MOA due to the pressure tolerance of the OCW load). By the way, if all brass and primers are kept uniform with this load, it is about a 1/3 MOA performer (1 inch) at 300 yards, so I'm not saying that uniforming brass doesn't help--it obviously does. It's just that an OCW load is much more tolerant of pressure altering component changes.

If you want to test the resilience of your own pet load, just load up a 1% increased charge, and a 1% decreased charge, and fire those two loads into a three shot group with the standard charge and see how it goes. In many cases, you'll find that either the low or high charge will group with the standard charge, but not both. This should at least tell you which way to go with redevelopment.

After you have positively identified the OCW, you can then adjust the seating depth to fine tune the load for ultimate accuracy.  After doing so, you can be assured the final load recipe will be a consistent, solid performer.

Dok,

Dit is nou 'n baie interessante manier van lading ontwikkeling. EK het al gesien hoe POI verskil in 'n koue nag vs 'n warm dag. Dit maak mens onseker voor 'n jag, met hierdie manier skakel mens risiko's uit.

daai is die ou metodes van dit doen, maar mens moet dit eers verstaan om te weet hoe die node program werk wat ons nou gebruik.

Ons werk nou daai Optimal Charge weight wat die perfekte spoed/node is wiskundig uit. So jy skiet net oor die chrono om die lading te kry wat jou die spoed gee en dan speel jy net met die TPL om Die dinge te finetune.

Net gou n'vraag asb. As jy voorheen TPL uitgwerk het en jy vind nou dat jou TPL se 81.5mm is en soos jy skiet skiet jy mos loop bietjie uit en jy werk weer TPL uit en dis nou 82 moet jy nou jou TPL op patroon ook met die .5 mm aan pas en weer ladings uitwerk

So die program bepaal die ideale spoed vir die kaliber volgens die skokgolf wat deur die loop beweeg, en dit word deur looplengte ens beinvloed?

Om die perfekte lading te hou moet jy maar die TPL van tyd tot tyd aanpas soos wat jou loop uitskiet ja.
