Ek wil graag weet of mens kan thermal imaging scopes in SA kry? ( As ja) waar en wat sal dit mens kos? (As nee) wat is die wet om n scope in jou tas uit die USA te vat?

I have answered this question before, so do a search on the forum. Optics is classified in four classes, class 1 & 2 you are allowed in South Africa. Class 3 you will nees a permit for and you are not allowed class 4 optics. You will start havinf problems in the US when you leave. Trying to leave with a class 3 without all the permits and you will land in jail. If you try to do it woth a class 4 optic and they will through away the key. Don't think you can hide something like that in normal travelers luggage, screening at airports will catch you.

Once you arrive in SA your problem will be to proof that what you have is legal. The average law enforcement officer will not know the difference. Best situation will be for you is if they are only trying to collect there import tax. If you have the correct paperwork you would not be able to hide the actual price you pay for it.

Get sombody with a US passport to do it for you, but I can see it work if it is a rifle mounted optic. Easier to explain.

Thermal optics cover the full range, class 1 to 4. The quality and more importantly capabilities varies greatly. Even the low quality ones are expensive - $3500.

I saw some very cheap ones at S & O online, but dependent on your needs I would rate these a novelty item.

Did not make a mental note of the name. Can try and get the name if you need it. The thermal part slips on to the back of the scope and you watch the image on a TV screen above the scope.

This is what I was look at trying to get! It will be manly for jackal hunting. But I don't have any experience with the thermal!!! So what ever advise you have is much appreciated!!!

I have used the AN/PVA - 7 20 years ago and it can be a solution for what you are planning to use it for. All you have to do is add a low power lazer to the rifle to color your target. It works surprisingly well and you are not stuck with an optic mounted on your rifle that you can not use during daylight. The AN 7 has an infrared lazer all ready mounted on it to light up shadows to get a better view.

The X26 - XLR also seem to get good reviews, but I don't know if it would be possible to get it in South Africa. Something like the X39 might be more feasible for I can see that being legal in South Africa, but I cannot find any information on that spesific model.
