Pasiewe Vang kraal
Goeie dag
Ek het onlangs 25 Takbokke aangekoop naby Belfast, ek wil volgende jaar n paar vang en verkoop.
Het enige iemand vir my planne van n pasiewe vang kraal by die voer of by die water?
Groete
Evert

Eet Takbokke voer?

Re: Pasiewe Vang kraal
Sal 80% Skdunet werk? of moet ek kyk na Hesian? Of ander material?

Ek het in Namibia gesien hoe n oom Koedoes by n windpomp so pasief vang.

Re: Pasiewe Vang kraal
There are many things to take into consideration with a Passive capture unit. Sorry I am going to Chip in here as these units can be very dangerous in the hands of inexperienced or uninformed people - I personally have had a near miss with a Young Nyala bull(which happen to be the most dangerous when they just turn black and when they have 4' horns or longer one must be very wary as not only do they kill other animals but they are a serious health risk to 2 legged bi-peds in a confined area.)
Firstly try and stay away from a kraal that has 90 deg Corners and try and build a boma is circular ( an animal will run to a corner and this is where it will try and jump - if you catch buff passively they stick there butt in the corner and put the business end on the open side and the is no way they will budge from the corner) by not having corners you keep the animals moving. Circles are a bastard to build so rather try and build a Pentagon (this has 45deg corners).
Another critical factor is that you need to build the boma big enough that it is out of the flight zone - this is dependant on animals, how tame they are, what mood they are in and can vary from day to day. A safe size is 30m diameter if it is animals like Nyala you can work on a 10m dia but give them more space -remeber when it comes to darting max range is about 40m so donot go bigger than this.
In terms of a gate I have tried swing, Slide and fall gates and the best by far is a fall gate -I use a 5m sail gate with a heavy pole sewn into the bottom - releases are easy and there are many 12v advantages with regards to building a release and these can be built in using gate/remotes/sms recievers etc. I have had problems with slide gates slamming shut on Black Impala (let us just say "OUCH")

Re: Pasiewe Vang kraal
I have a Permanent Boma and I catch all my nyala, Impala, Springbuck and any other animal.
Making use of Valium powder in the feed helps them to be more calm and jump less. I have no issues and remove all my split rams using my boma. My permanent Boma has gumpole sides no conveyor and holding pens on the side to split animals once they have been capture along too with a loading ramp.
Passive capture is a thing of patience and by putting workers on to close the gate they either spend their time on their cell phones or they sleep - I have now a sophisticated Camera and remote release in my boma that I can log in through my cell phone and see what is in the boam and close it accordingly.

Re: Pasiewe Vang kraal
Catching Split rams is easy as when they reach a certain age the ram will split them from the group of his own accord and they will come to the boma on their own and so it is easy to catch them I then move them into the boma gang and at night with the use of a headlamp I grab them (you get kicked a few times but you learn how to manage them) I tag them and then chuck them on the groot plaas.
Nyala's are easy and I would imagine Takbokke are just as easy.
I have all the boma's from the Drop sides, Opskiet and gated boma's most of my units are mobile and I hire them out - but it takes weeks - I suggest if you have the resources build a permananet structure using Gumpoles, Bonnox fencing and 90% shade cloth, build a loading ramp and holding pens it works especially in small camps where choppers are a no go.
I have 87 animals (Springbuck, Impala) in 14ha and I manage them all using only my 1 x central passive BOMA -no choppers and only vets for the Black impala.
Having your animals on loose feed - Gemaalde luscern will help with the administration of valium powder when you want to catch - is is a safe drug that encourages appetite and works really well on calming the animals down.

I will take some pics of my Boma and try and load it up so you can see. The wind snapped one of my 110mm Gumpoles lastnight (60km/h winds in Thaba) so I currently have a door and a Wall down but this does not phase the animals and they just walk over the door.

Re: Pasiewe Vang kraal
Steel poles are planted 5m apart.
110mm x 5m horizontal poles x 2
50-75mm gumpoles tied to the Horizontal poles and placed on lintels to keep them off the ground.
Holding pens are 6m x 4m
Gang is 1.5m wide
Poles are 3 m tall.
You will see gang is not linear there are turns - this keeps the animals moving if they can see down a long gang they will not move down the gang easily - by limiting their forward vision you can get them to move easier.
I use sliding doors but in future projects I will keep the sliding door but have a fall sail and just close the sliding door once animals are caught.
I personally don't like boring gumpoles with a drill and using threadbar it weakens the integrity of the pole.
This is a costly exercise but it is built for life and if need be I can break it down and move it with ease.
