Kleurverandering op Blouwildebees

Post by Soutpansberg »

Hello julle

Groete
Francois

Daai kameras neem dam netjiese fotos.

Many of those animals in those pictures would be sold by underhanded wildlife traders in South Africa as Golden wildebeest splits - not that they are as there appears to be no golden bull with them but it looks like they carry the recessive gene.
Characteristics of the recessive gene - not all BWB carry them but many individuals all over the country do have them which leads one to believe that once upon a time they were in fact plentiful within the sub-region - animals that are most affected by this gene appear to be animals that come from drier regions - Limpopo bushveld and semi desert leading one to believe that it may have something to do with Thermo-regulation - but let us not get off the point.
Characteristics of animals carrying the golden gene.
  • Often the coat is lightly coloured upon close inspection one might actually see that the tips of the hairs are golden on the body in soft light they appear to have a golden appearance
There is considerable long golden hairs along the the sides of the mane as shown in your picture of the animal closest to the camera.
Animals that have a dominant reccissive gene have long maroon hair between the front hooves (All pure golden animals have these maroon hair).
Another observation is that is one can get close enough good "Spilts" appear to have a white marking on the lip this can be seen from a short distance from the animal.
I will try post some pics as reference to the above.

Hope this helps...

Other things that we also look for is white chevrons on the forehead and sometimes we get white around the scent glands on the side of the face.
