According to procedure/law the SAPD must inspect your safe before issuing the weapon's license to you. So, they have your address/details and know exactly where and what type of safe you have as well as the amount and type of weapons.

How safe is this information? We know the SAPD is battling with corruption and to obtain this kind of data would not be too difficult for a determined syndicate/thief.

I had a break-in about a month ago while I was at home - only saw it the following morning. Nothing was taken, nothing. I could see they were looking for something due to the open drawers and cupboards etc. They did not touch any electronics. The same agenda was followed a few months ago during another break-in just a few blocks from where I stay. Same routine was followed - laptop was in plain sight, but nothing was stolen - they were looking for something. My guess is weapons.

I will be applying for a license for a weapon that I inherited and was wondering about this matter. Any thoughts on this?

I spoke to a local security company regarding weapons, licenses etc. It's frightening how easy it is to get info over the telephone by claiming to be a certain person.

I don't think personal info at SAPS is very safe. Just the other day I read an article on News24 about a break-in in Centurion (I think). The owner went to the Lyttleton Police Station to report the incident. He mentioned that he was lucky that the robbers did not discover the second safe in his house. A week later they (the robbers) were back at his house. Dressed as policemen, they gained entry into the house and then demanded to be taken to the second safe. Search the article. The was more to it, just can't remember everything now. All I'm trying to say is, this is scary and our hands are tied as we all have to report robberies in order to get a case number for our insurance companies.
