Beste Jonk Jagter,

Learning your hound to hunt will not be a problem, most windhonde will chase and kill by instinct. Biggest problem you have is hunting up and recall.

Make your hound as obedient as possible BEFORE you enter it to game.

When it is more or less obedient and physically mature, enter your hound with some easy kills...easy kills will prevent your dog barking from frustration. A good windhond is silent when chasing prey. And will come back to you when it has lost what it was chasing.

I don't know anything about bokke...how big is a bok?...when bokke are small then it will be no problem when your hound has killed hares or such. When bokke are large it would be a good idea to run it with an older experienced dog that knows how to take one down.

Thanks lenard.my pup is 5months now and i train it alot of recall because she has saluki in her and they are stubborn.but shes learning from my jackrussel to chase.i wont worry about the bite because she is very aggresive,i just came from a morning hunt with some guys and because i dont have an adult dog yet they were making kills with theirs.the guys whom i got my hound from,catch steen bokke.but one promised me a jbm boerhond they get super big and are very good.i enjoy hunting and because its my first dog i would like to learn alot.thanks...where are you from or located?

Sounds good...but if were to use my saluki for lamping I would not have her team up with the russel aal the time as a teenager, chance is there she might learn to hunt up. Hunting up means not coming back after a chase but continue looking for other game.  My first dog was a pain in the *ss because I allowed her to hunt up when she was young...het recall was extremely bad, much too independent...I could stand for over an hour waiting for her to come back.

Allowing is not the good word...I gave her the opportunity to hunt up because I liked to see her working. I did not leash/unleash her often. Nowadays I do not allow youngsters to roam free with an older dog too much, they are too excited. I unleash them and make a fun game to get back to me and then I leash them again...only to unleash them again a bit later on for other fun. The dog should know that coming back does not mean the end of the fun and that it is good to come back as there might be more fun...or a tasty snack. Coming back quickly should become a routine that is kind of rewarding for the dog.

But if you are not lamping and have all the space in the world, hunting up is not a big problem, dog will finally come back. And your later dogs will be better trained than your first.

YEAH i bet its fun  watching your dog in action,i cant wait for mine to mature so i can join in hunts.i never saw rabbits here close to where i live but its spring now and they are everywhere.i just get irritated that me and my jack russel cant catch them.but hey itl take patience to prune my pup.how do you get yours fit and make it a fast runner?

As long as it is still young, less then a year for a big dog, I let a dog play by itself or with other dogs, they make eachother fit. Work on the recall and retrieving if the dog is up for that. Start short trips with the dog next to the bicycle. When the dog is tired or stiff the next day I have pushed it too much.

When it is more mature, I take it for longer trips next to the bicycle, 5-15 km or let it hunt. Work will make a dog fit.

All depends on the attitude and physics of the dog, some dogs can be strained more than others, some dogs have to be held down a bit.

Give it rest when limping or when you observe wear/tear on the feet/legs.

Hi there Jonk Jagter and Lennard..

Greyhounds are hunters by instinct and normally dont need much training in hunting but the more you go the better it gets..
There is no problem to take your dog for hunting while she is still youg, but dont over do it..
I stay close to Witbank and dont hunt much with my dogs coz of the people this side and wont go there any way coz Jaracal is not a site to talk about hunting Bucks and rabbits, but hunting Jackals is very boring as i went with some people few months back.
I come from KZN where i used to hunt Bucks and now and then rabbits..
JBM have some good dogs but normally SIZE dont matter much.. I have a Crokers Nikita x Hot Tania, Irish male and JBM wanted to buy him from me but i wont sell my dogs, Irish dogs is getting very hard to find now days, and i have a male from Count Lani x Foxy Addis both parents from Australia..
