QL help needed with my 300PRC

Post by Rath1976 »

Hi gents,

Is there anyone that can assist me with a starting point for my load development. Here is my rifle details:

Infinite Arms Action
Proof 32" barrel
Hodgdon Retumbo powder
Hornady ELD Match 225gr
Brass ADG
CCI 200 Primers but might have to change to CCI 250 ( availability issues )

Let me know i there is anything else needed and I'll respond.

Regards

I have had a look at the Hodgon Reloading Centre and they advise 71-77gr as start and max.

I tried to calibrate QL with their Berger load and getting the max speed of 2730fps the pressure calculated 3000 psi lower than the value they measured. I then used the 225 ELDM and a 32 inch barrel and would advise starting at 72gr and go up in 1gr increments. The calculated speed is 2930fps at max pressure, whereas Node 6 seems to be close to 2830fps and a safe pressure of 55K psi.

You will have to shoot samples to get speed and then QL can do its magic.

Please post your results. I'm very interested in how the Retumbo will perform in the 300PRC. I'm currently using Reloder 26, but it is getting
rediculously expensive, IF you can get it.

Those 225gr ELD-M's are flying real straight..... ;)

Thank you so much.

I’ll take my chrony with and just check the speeds as well. What grain was that Node 6 at. I was thinking in those speed ranges as well. The 2900’s are a bit much I feel.

The info given by QL is very theoretical at present. Speed is what you need to look at. Once you have practical information as to charge and speed, I would also need the fired case volume and an actual measured barrel length. The COL as shot would also be needed and here I would advise a jump of 1mm or more to the lands.

Would the muzzle break make a difference in load development or should I leave the break off when doing these tests

I don' think a muzzle brake should affect the speed. Less recoil helps with more accurate shooting. Just put your chrony at 5m from the muzzle as you don't want to measure the speed of the gas.

Hi there,

Compliments of the new year to you and family.

I have managed to get some more testing done. Unfortunately it wasn’t without hang fires again.

I have jotted down on the targets what i could. Started at 76, gn and going up in increments of .3gn with 78gn max. Did 1 shot at 78.1 gn.

I have attached some pics of the target. Maybe you can give me a node to load some more bullets to test groupings at 100 and 200 and 300m

Or if you could pop me your cell number I could whatsapp perhaps

Regards
