20 minute long jackal howl.

I need some advice chaps. The last week ive called 4 different spots a few kilo's apart each night with no success. I know the jackals are there but im getting no response at all. On all occasions a lone jackal has called for over twenty minutes at a time nonstop. This is not responding to my calls .twice when I give my ten minutes silence before i start. Then twice whilst im calling.. But very far away so I move closer and nothing no response at all. One called behind my house up a koppie two nights ago for also twenty minutes or more so I went and called and nothing. Dead quite. I want to know what call is it that they are shouting. And any advice on calling them in. I shot a old male last week in the afternoon but since that dead quiet but they still shout all over nightly. Thanks in advance

Josh, what calls have you been using, and what sequences have you tried. It is no use telling you to try something you have already tried. I know your area is very thick, so be careful that he has not smelt you without you even seeing him.

Hi Wayne the jackals have all been atleast 2 kilos away. And without me calling. They were Just shouting out of their own. Ive been using food calls for the first half hour mostly vlakhasie or springhaas then jak Aleen or the first part of mooihuil then after 10 mins a bit of baklei but with no response at all not even vocaly and I know they are there. Im calling the areas they are eating not their territorial areas. I can't get up to them but im calling roughly a kilo from where I think they are. I don't know if I must give them a few weeks for the pups to get active out of the holes etc or try something new.

Josh, a jackal responding with that "wha-wha-wha" even before you start calling or while playing some "prey in distress"-call is not a good sign (in my opinion) Normally a sign of him/her knowing the stands are used repeatedly, knowing the lights, knowing the caller, knowing the vehicle etc. Trying "food"-calls will not be effective. You've got to locate the exact spot that jackal is shouting from and find the best stand, downwind within 200-500m. The most likely sucesfull sounds will be single jackals (something like Jakkalshuil) and fighting / eating sounds (something like Jakkalsbaklei 4). Don't be tempted into playing your favourate rabbit in distress sound or any other "food" for that matter. That is going to be a dead give-away and you are not going to fool that jackal with "food". Try that once or at the most twice.

Rather try and temp his curiosity with sounds made by other jackal and periods of silence.

Only my opinion and maybe not the best advise.

Louis, I think Josh's problem is the terrain, very mountainous and bushy. If they are that far I think they are shouting from the neighbors as well. I think your advice is spot on, it is just that in our area we can not always get to " kern gebied"

Josh, Try day calls. Pin point where they keep calling from, GPS bearing lines and check for spots to use.

Thanks very much Louis and Wayne i really appreciate the advice. Wayne is right though the ones that where calling could not have seen me from where they are shouting from. I think I'll have to give it a shot early morning or evening then. The one pair ive been after for 4 years I klap the pups every year but not the adults of that particular pair. What I want to know is what does that call mean? Is it territorial or Just greeting or what? Thanks again. Another thing this time of year if they are eating lambs in a specific area almost nightly what would be my best calls to get them in?

Jy gaan waarskynlik nie daardie jakkals by die vangplek ingeroep kry nie. Die kerngebied en vangplek is nie noodwendig die selfde plek nie. Jy moet die kerngebied opspoor, maar verkieslik die nes. Dit is jou beste kans. Maar dit werk ook nie altyd waar jakkalse se kleintjies al 'n paar keer doodgemaak is nie. Bly egter jou beste kans.
