This is our new TacDriver profile for all information regarding the new TacDriver Practical / Tactical Long Range competition series.
We'll be doing a full post a bit later with info for our inaugural Steel Storm 2015 competition to be held in Touws Rivier from the 18th to 20th of September.

Great idea to start Practical shoots in SA.
One thing though, the 3000fps limit puts all my rifles out of the running...
Why the velocity limit?

100gr Swift Scirocco - 3340fps

hmmmm.... perhaps think of loading that 6mm up with a 105gr Berger Hybrid.
It'll pull you nicely back to closer to 3000fps and it's pretty much the top bullet used in the USA for this type of competition.

If I had a 1:8" barrel, yes.
But it's a varmint gun built on a tactical platform with a 1:12 tube...

What's the reason for the 3000fps limit?

It's basically to reduce damage to the targets that are positioned at 150m (the tricky, unsupported 'should be easy to hit' ones)
...and 120 targets are not cheap.

We're following the 'Competition-Dynamics' and 'Precision Rifle Series' rules, as we're in the process of affiliating with them, and it's part of their rules too for the same reasons. If we get it right, then SA shooters can earn US points to compete in the US/World Champs.

Just a question, Would a 338LM loaded with a 250gn bullet at around 2900fps not be doing Much more damage than 6mm bullet at 3700fps at 150m to the target?

With all the research that we have done on the subject, it seems that speed is the killer, not energy as such.
... it might have more to do with the tensity of malleable solids at velocity, and around 3000fps is the magic number.

Would be great if you do find out more info and can share it with us.

Yip, targets and stands are mobile, so we can setup anywhere in SA.
We're looking for venue's in Gauteng and Pietermaritzburg area.
...need hilly/mountainous terrain with backstops out to 1km.

The Touws Rivier Practical range has 180 degrees of shooting out to 1km, and the Tactical range is 200m wide out to 2km (we're only using the first 800m though).

Let us know if you might have a venue.. or 2 adjacent farms could work.

Shooting my 25-06 at steel gongs with 115gn Bergers at 3260fps ave. it has far less damage than friends 300wm with 185 bergers at 300m for instance. Maybe it depends on the steel used also possible that at the closer distances the speed is still such that it reacts differently? I am not one for shooting gongs at closer that 300m distances on a straight range though. I will be giving the 338LM a go soon (still have not shot it) and see what it does compared to the 25-06 which is unfortunately the fastest calibre I can compare to.

I don't think a 338 will feature in this comp. Apart from recoil fatigue you would need to have deep pockets to feed the beast.
We discussed the 338's recoil on Saturday and one shooter left his 338 LM at home due it kicking to much (he normally shoots with a silencer and still held the opinion that recoil fatigue affects him). Another top shooter using a 338 LM, with MB, also commented that recoil fatigue sets in after about 20 shots and he really needs to concentrate for the last part of the XSSSA comp.

I would love to have our gongs tested vs high velocity cartridges but I am confident that no real damage will be observed.
I will see what a 100gr Barnes TTSXBT at about 3250 fps does and report back ( I will just need to get a hiding to place shoot from so I am safe from ricochets

Yip, it's not the far targets that are the problem... just the really close few (100-200m max).
You should see what .223's do at 50m !

Anyway, all good... just didn't realise that so many people in SA are shooting above 3000fps.
