"However, she explained that sustainable trophy hunting and private ownership of game has allowed wildlife to flourish, with private game reserves growing from four to about 10 000 in 50 years. Game headcount rose to 16-million from only 500 000 in the same period. "

So hulle was baie vatbaar vir enige inmenging.

Cobus, I cannot think of any species with financial value that has become extinct since 1900.
The rhino still has financial value but at the rate poaching of that species continues to escalate it may well be heading for extinction. With regard to rhino and elephant, in criticizing the destruction/burning of ivory (Kenya, France) and the trade ban in rhino horn, Ron Thomson said something along these lines: Which idiot burns/destroys gold bars confiscated from drug dealers instead of cashing in those gold bars and using them in the fight against drugs? I think he makes a good point.
Sungazer lizard numbers have apparently dropped significantly in the wild - partly because of the pet trade. So here is a species that is being threatened - in the wild - by it's financial value as a pet.
It is unfortunate, in a sense, that species that have little or no financial value are not protected to the same degree that the high-value species are. It is a sad that species such as riverine rabbit, blue swallow and golden mole seem to have a drastically higher probability of becoming extinct than the blesbok, impala or kudu.
Perhaps with the riverine rabbit you could market a few p.a. to species hunters for a significant amount of money (perhaps double what you would pay for a blue duiker considering that the rr are far more rare). That may make some landowners sit up, take note and implement some sort of initiative that protects the rr with a promise of a financial incentive down the line.
However, what about species that are not typically hunted or otherwise utilised e.g. the blue swallow or golden mole? We cannot allow them to become extinct due to that fact that we currently have no or little use for them. As hunters we should also be conservationists. (First a conservationist, then a hunter otherwise there will be nothing to hunt). And as custodians of the plants and animals we should be concerned about all of them - not just the ones we hunt or those that have financial value.
