Sy ma of pa is n swartbok,
Maar meestal sal sy pa swart wees.
Net n sal laat n gewone ram sy swart ooi laat dek.

Dankie Hugo,

Behalwe as jy laat toetse doen?

With impala there is no way to id Splits other than genetic Parentage there are currently no markers for the Black gene so the only way that you will tell if they are genuine splits is if you have a DNA sample from the ram and the offspring that you are buying and normally at this stage in the game you have bought the animals -so it is too late...
With split animals they can either show some black Phenotype or they can show none at all - I can show you split ewes that have no black coloration and that are as red as they come yet with a black ram they produce black lambs every year. I can also show you Ewe's that look like black faced impala that have prominent black markings even on their fore legs that still produce red lambs every year.
Best is to buy from a reputable breeder and if not go and view the animals first hand and see the black lambs amongst the herd, Establish when they started with black impala - remember there is 3 years between Phase's. So if the guys are selling Phase 2 splits then they started with a black ram in May 2009, if they are phase 3 May 2006 and there are very few guys that started all those years ago.
Try and speak to the labour on the famr and ask them when did these impala arrive here.
When I started off in the Wildlife trade of live animals in 2009 I went to a guy that was selling "Split rooibokke" near warmbad.
I spent a few hours looking at the animals in the boma and the ones in the camp on the same farm - the farmer told me he had been busy with breeding since 2007. When I spoke to the Labour he said to me - "The boss she take the impala today - next week the truck she come -she bring many impala to the boma and then the new people she come and buy the impala after they look in the camp."
Game agents, farmers - there are many blixems in this industry - know your source and ask around about them be they agents or farmers - if they do skelm business a few phone calls will quickly establish their credentials. - You need not buy animals through me but give me a ring and I can guide you on the credentials of most of the skelm operators in the industry.
Many guys also believe that when you put normal impala with a black ram they automatically become splits - this is not the case they are still full blown red impala.
Also even if a chap says to you he started in 2009 Phase 1 splits (now 2years old) Will have only taken ram last year and their Lambs will be phase 2(7months) and if they are selling ewes "Split ewes" that are 3years of age or older guess what they are not splits.
Breed your own splits or buy certified normal impala pregnant by a black ram (this saves money as you have different blood on which to use your ram - after year three you shoot all your original red ewes out - it takes a little longer but at least you know what you have. Buying an Additional black ewe expedites your return on investment...
Sorry for the english ek praat beter as wat ek kan skryf.. so as jy nie verstaan kontak my via PM.
