Viking BH Field Test

This weekend I had the opportunity to test the Viking BH on a hunt on the poor man's buffalo aka Bluewillebeest.

I decided to take the 100gr Viking as I have found that out of my setup a 100gr FP and BH flies the best.

I tuned my bow with the BH on the BH butt before the time. Needless to say, I just resharpened it with a quick swipe or 5 through my Warthog V-sharp and it was shaving hair.

I arrived on the farm on Friday morning 20 Jul and we decided to put a few arrows into the butt to see if all is still okay. With my first arrow I shot basically through the butt. The arrow hit a steelpost behind the butt. It actually cut a piece of the steelpost. Upon inspection of the blade, only a small dull piece could be located where it hit the steel post. Resharpened it again, perfect.

Out to the hide I knew that this arrow will go straight for the BWB. My setup that I currently have is Maxxis 35 Dangerous Game bow, maxed out at 95.5pounds with 31inch drawlenght. It pushes my 600gr arrows at 302.5fps, which gives me a KE of 121 and a MOM of 0.8. I have been asked previously why shoot such a heavy setup, and I live by the motto of Dr Ashby: "Do not prepare for when everything goes right, prepare for when everything goes wrong".

The BWB basically came in at 1630 and for 30 minutes no shot was presented, with about 30 BWB turning round and round. At 1700 the PH radio'd me and told me he was coming, I said to him just wait down the road for 10 minutes. 3 minutes later a nice Cow stood slightly QA and I drew my bow, settled the pin and send the arrow on the way.I see the arrow hit a little low for where I aimed and saw the fletches sticking out. My first impression was that I hit the thick shoulder bone of the BWB, but she bucked and she fell down and lay motionless within 5 meters from where she was shot. In the mayhem of her being shot, she broke my arrow off and I saw that I got a good 20inches of penetration.

Upon walking to the BWB cow I saw the arrow tip sticking out in the side of the neck for about 4 inches

Upon closer inspection I see that the BH stayed intact. Great stuff.

When the animal was slaughtered, it was discovered that I did hit the big shoulder bone deadcentre and that it broke clean through

So, what is my verdict:

Although a hunter never plans a bad shot, it inevitable happens. Thus, with my very heavy setup and very strong Goldtip Kinetic 200 spine arrows and the VIKING broadhead, I still managed to break through a big shoulder bone, cut the animals arteries and the BH still had enough momentum to cut through the hide. The BH is in great shape and has already been resharpened for the next hunt

For me, the Viking broadhead was the star of the show. I could have had any other BH on my setup (fixed blade, I am not even talking about mechanicals here)  and I am very confident that that BH would not have broken the bone and penetrated like it did, compared to the Viking

The Viking is EXTREMELY strong and very hard. This is one very good BH, that will deliver even if you do not do your part with regards to shot placement. Although my shot placement was not great, I still managed, due to the Viking BH, to bring the meat home

So, get the best, get the Viking BH. You will not be disappointed. You can also ask JvanWyk or Impact, they saw this firsthand and they will tell you how an awesome BH the Viking BH is.

Nog net een boogjag vir die jaar oor en gaan maar hou by Montec's vir hom, maar as ek terug is gaan ek vikings koop en instel, sodat ek reg is vir volgende jaar!
