Did you see the TV broadcast on the illegal removal of plants in the Richtersveld?

No, didn't see that one.

Everything is being plundered. On land, we can at least see the devastation. We can see the damage to the landscape, we see less animals in a region, etc. But it's not so easy to see the devastation caused in the ocean. Over fishing and illegal fishing by Chinese (and whoever else) trawlers, for example. It's not as visible as the poaching on land. One worries that we will get to the point where the population of certain fish species - or marine ecosystems - just collapse!

Yep, I know about that. That's why I refuse to support the local wood sellers in the area around my house. I prefer charcoal/briquettes using "indringerbos".

Hi Swede.
Would you mind sharing his details and the area he operates in?
I’d like to support such a supplier.
Regards, Thinus.

Ai, altyd kommerwekkend.

Hierdie herinner my aan kreef by die Weskus smokkelaars. Baie neem standpunt in, maar as ‘n partytjie gehou word, tyd druk, gaan koop gou gou by die smokkelaars, net om die draai. Een braai sal mos nie verskil maak nie. ???

Beste.

Last year I was driving from Durban to Wildcoast on the N2 with my family. Well, I must have seen 30-40 guys standing ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY holding up bags of crayfish for sale. My bet is that:
1. Whoever caught those crayfish did not have a license
2. A number of those crayfish would have been under the minimum size
3. The guys selling the crayfish did not have a license to sell them. Nor can it be legal to sell anything on the side of the highway.

I don't know what price was per bag but I think it must have been quite high because most of the cars that I saw parked by the vendors were luxury vehicles and 4x4s. We are our own worst enemies when we buy stuff on the black market rather than supporting honest operators.

There is also clearly NO WILL or interest in stopping the illegal wood or crayfish trade. They are there for everyone to see, on main and national roads - with the products in their possession.
