Good evening
Can any of the experinced long range shooters give their input on whether a first focal plane or second focal plane reticle is better suited for long range shooting?
I appreciate the input.

Sean I prefer my FFP scopes when I dial a distance and simply hold for wind. The the hash marks for wind holds true irrespective of magnification. Scopes that I use for hunting as well where I use the elevation marks I prefer second focal plane because I can match the magnification to a specific distance using Strelok

Unknown distances where you have to transition between targets at different distances - FFP
Known distances where you shoot multiple shots at the same target you might as well use a SFP.

Most long range shooters internationally use FFP reticles ie Schmidt Bender, US Optics, Kahles, nightforce beast.
Although you get some of them in seconde focal plane most serious users prefer FFP because the reticle measurements stays consistent over the zoom range.
The earging reticle is not a problem if you choose the correct reticle. I use a P4 fein reticle on my Schmidt Bender PMII and haven't had any problems so far up to 1300m.

Depends on what you qualify as long range.

Unkown distance and long range shooting should not be mentioned in the same sentence as this is just waisting money or irresponsible.

Known distance, "medium" range with multiple targets that forces many transitions and where there is a time limit I would suggest FFP - PRS type

Rangefinding using a reticle is done most accurately on your highest mag so you might as well use a SFP scope if you consider this.

Long range where you need a thin reticle to not cover as much of your target I would suggest SFP.

With the FFP scope my application would also not require small groups and it would typically not matter where the target is hit. SFP I would use to shoot small groups at long ranges and I would have more time to do so.

Rangefinding at long range is done with a laser rangefinder, if you disagree then you can shoot FFP because your target is big and it probably does mot matter where you hit it.

Hold off can be done with both FFP and SFP. Time just plays a role.

What discipline does these "most long range shooters internationally" shoot and what do you mean with internationally, how many countries are involved?

I ask because the only research and a lot of talk about FFP i have read is about PRS type shooting.
F-class which is actually an international sport is probably not part of these statistics you mention?


I shoot both FFP and SFP so have nothing against either and both have a place but feel people punt FFP as if it is THE solution.

If you want to hit a human torso sized target at any practical distance FFP ,if you want to shoot small groups at known distance SFP.

With the political climate in the world today FFP gets my vote!

In my humble inexperienced opinion the range of application for FFP in SA is at the moment very limited, but it does go well with your tacticool pants and operator beard.

Al rede daarvoor is dat niemand op Jaracal al 'n lisensie vir 'n 20mm kaliber kon kry nie.

Just my own experience.

I try shoot F-Open and I also shoot gongs out at long range.

For Bisley I would agree that it makes no difference if its FFP or SFP as you can see the impact on the target and make corrections as necessary.

For Gongs out at long range, it is very nice to see the impact on the reticle and not have to worry about what magnification your scope is set on, to calculate the required adjustment needed for your next shot. Most SFP scopes are calibrated at Max magnification but I hardly ever shoot on Max magnification, even out to 1000m (mostly because of mirage and because I like a bigger Field of view when spotting) so knowing that one mark on the reticle always means a correction of 4 clicks or 1 MOA, just simplifies calculating corrections while you are shooting by yourself or spotting for someone else.

Just my 2c and my own reasons for now shooting FFP with my long range guns,
