Werk vir my

Oscar, you are quite right.

Just about all new shotguns - ranging from entry-level quality to top of the range - have selectors. Normally, the selector is combined with the safety catch. A simple flick to the left or the right allows you to choose which barrel will fire first - the top (over) or the bottom (under). Guns that have no selector normally have two triggers and in that case the front trigger fires the bottom barrel and the back trigger fires the top barrel.

In all over & under shotguns I have ever come across or heard of the bottom barrel (which is normally fired first) has a more open choke than the top barrel. There are lots of combinations you could use i.t.o. choke. I started with 1/4 choke (under) and full choke (over) but later changed my top choke to 3/4. I have not changed that combination in more than 12 years and it's worked fine for me. It's probably a good combo unless you concentrate on high-flying ducks and geese in which case tighter chokes would probably be better.

Chokes can ba a pain in the butt. The choke aftermerket in the the USA is huge.I shoot trap with a single barrel Beretta trap gun and use a full choke for that.My hunting shotgun i use 3/4 bottom and top full choke. I think it is more important also to know the pattern of your shotgun. Dont keep changing chokes it is like i have said a pain.Net my mening

Agree, Beretta.

That's why I haven't changed mine on my Beretta for more than 12 years.

On my FIAS where I had to shorten the barrel I have a fixed cylinder (u) and 3/4 (o) screw-in. That combo also works fine.

On my Miroku double-trigger the chokes are fixed 1/4 (u) and full (o). Also happy with this when I use it.

Most of my shooting was done over dogs where the birds flushed close-by and so 1/4 choke was more than adequate for the first shot and 3/4 also good for the second shot when the birds were further out. I just stuck with that combo when dove/pigeon shooting and also when I no longer had dogs. Worked for me. I'm kind of the same with my rifles - I stick to one load e.g. 180gr Swift A-frames in my 30-06 regardless of where I am hunting. I don't do 150gr for open plains, 180gr for open bushveld and 220gr for thick bush.

Another wingshooter will tell you that he changes his chokes each time depending on where he is hunting and what he is hunting. And that is what works for him.

MADFIN, back to your original question. The fact that you are firing the top barrel first may be the problem. If, as is normal, your top (o) barrel has the tighter choke then by the time you fire your second (u) barrel the birds may be out of effective range given that the bottom barrel normally has a more open choke and will be slightly less effective at longer range.

Try using cylinder to 1/2 choke in the bottom barrel and 3/4 to full choke in the top and make sure you select the bottom barrel to fire first. Then find a load that patterns well and you will be fine.

Let us know if you've sorted it out.

Hi Vlakvark

It's actually a very interesting question as to WHY the bottom barrel is fired first? All the fixed barrel o/u's manufactured were made to fire the bottom barrel first. Fixed barrel s/s's were made to fire the right barrel first as the left was more tightly choked. Competition guns more often than not do not have selectors and they too are made to fire the bottom barrel first. Today, just about ALL field guns have selectors so, if we can choose anyway, why the bottom barrel first?

Perhaps there is merit in what the instructor told you about increasing the lifespan of the gun? I don't know.

The best explanation I have ever heard is that, although the actual recoil when firing either barrel is the same, apparently when the bottom barrel is fired it lifts the barrels less than when the top barrel is fired. So when firing the bottom barrel first it allows the shooter to align quicker on the departing bird. Seems plausible?

If that is the case then I wonder why in s/s guns the right barrel was always made to fire first? Surely the alignment theory doesn't apply there?

Shotguns experts come in here please ....

Ek dink jou antwoord is reg.
