Is this because jackal numbers are 65X more than caracal or because caracal are more difficult to call in?
I've read that on average it takes longer for a cat to respond to a call than a jackal. And since you can't pass up a jackal that's coming in, for fear of educating him, you take the shot which alerts the cat and it does not come in. Is this a fair assessment and would it also explain why so few cats are shot compared to jackals.
And in an area that has some ideal habitat for both predators, what would the ratio of jackals to caracal be then?

This depends on the area, but there are generally many more jackal than caracal. In my opinion it's much harder to call in caracal than jackal because of the time required. Caracals is hunted by the farmers using cages more often.

Interesting. On my friend's farm in the Dwaalboom area, 2km from Botswana, there still seem to be be plenty of jackal. However, like you, we also seem to be seeing a lot more smaller predators than in previous years especially civets, bat-eared foxes, aardwolves. Also there are now plenty of springhares when they were very scarce a few years ago. On one of our night drives this year we saw two jackals lurking in the field among 15 or so springhares. I know I can receive a life ban from this thread for saying so but we didn't have a rifle with us and even if we had we don't shoot the jackals unless my friend specifically requests that we do.

Amazing how after more than a century of persecution - restricting their movement with jackal-proof fences, poisoning, trapping, shooting, chasing with hounds, high-tech calling, night-vision equipment etc etc these creatures continue to survive in such numbers that they cause the damage that they do.

Only a very small % of people hunt Jackal on farms especially if they dont farm sheep, only in the last couple of years have the game farmers gone after them and if he has a “new” farmer next to him that couldnt care less or someone that farms cattle hie already losing the battle. Most people on grain/cattle farms couldnt care less untill the jackal start killing cows while they give birth, at that point he realises that the couple Jackal he had on his farm was not actually a couple and then Geno goes and shoot 35+ on one night. I think Jackal number are much higher now than even before peole settled Africa
