im thinking of a good supplementary cartridge to the 260rem. i'd like to shoot 190vld's. the ballistics on the 260 are amazing for paper out to 1k, and deer to say 700 with perfect placement, i;d limit it to probably round 500. but was looking for something with a touch more pop without stepping up to the magnums. i'd like to make it a 30 cal. thoughts on the '06AI? other suggestions/ i'd like t get about 200 yards better killing range out of it. thanx for all info! i would really appreciate load data if anyone has any. preferably based on a 26" barrel. again thanx for all info though!!!

My dad has a 30-06AI, but unfortunately has yet to shoot it. You should be able to push a 200-210 bullet right around 2650fps. It will compliment the 260 nicely. I would use a 26 or 28 inch tube with a 1:10 twist. Using magnum based powders like Ramshot Hunter, and Magnum, H4831, H1000, Aliant RL19 and 22 would probably work best. You will be able to take game especially deer to 1000yds with good shot placement. The 06 standard has a good history of long range target and hunting success. You may be able to push the 190 Berger to around 2750-2800fps. Hope this helps.

The long range potential these days with the 3006 is better than ever. With the right barrel, powder and bullet you can really get out there for an elk load. Especially at elk altitudes.

If you are going by the 1500'# rule, there are loads that will get you to 800 yards. With more traditional loads, 650-700 is about it.

You put a 26" tube on a 30.06, load a Berger 185 or 190 VLD with a high velocity powder like Re22 or similar and use a magnum primer, I cannot see why this combo won't down an elk at 800-1000 yards. Just know the drop.

I took a Cow Elk this last fall at 525yds with a .30-06AI using a 168g Berger VLD. (Loaded to 3100 FPS.) She didn't know what hit her. That being said, I know it was a Ackley Improved version and it does have a 26" tube, but I think that a .30-06 Springfield could absolutely do the same thing properly loaded and bullet placed in the vitals.

I'm actually switching to a 190g VLD this fall, The drops are more, but every bit as consistant as the 168g VLDs and the velocity is at 2900fps. It hits with more authority and with actually extends the effective killing range of the cartridge by about 200yds.

I'd not hesitate to shoot a Muley at 1000yds with this rifle, however a Elk... I'd have to think about that.

I get a kick out of all the military types stroking the prowess of the 308 Win but when the topic of the 30-06 comes up it is considered nothing better then the 308.

Even in its original loads it matches ANYTHING the 308 can produce. Using modern high pressure loadings, it will far out perform the 308.

Anyone that feel the 308 is an acceptable chambering simply can not make the argument that the 30-06 is not at least as capable.

Many will say the 30-06 is not as accurate as the 308. Well, perhaps if your comparing an old 03A in 06 with a modern M40 in 308......

Put them both on an equal platform and I would enjoy seeing someone prove the point that the 30-06 is any less accurate then the 308.

As far as long range shooting. With a properly set up rifle, the 30-06 will easily offer accurate 1000 yard reach with its best ballistic bullets. Personally, for big game hunting, I would limit it to 600-700 yards personally, just as I would the 308 but it will certainly perform at this range on big game.

Its really a matter of the rifle more then the chambering as it is in most cases.
