2 of 3 Druppeltjies ou bloed sal hom nuuskierig maak. Yster se afdruk gewig moet reggestel wees anders gaan jy MEERKATTE vang.
Gogga sal die nag draaitjie kom maak.

Slagyster kenners,
Is daar ander maniere?
groete,

Hi Brits,
There is nothing magical about setting traps, or cages for that matter, 99% of your success is not how they are set, its in your head,
Cats are basically arrogant, so all you have to do is to create an environment which will appeal to him, or to convince him to investigate the inside of your cage, you need an attractant, be that olfactory or or sensory, I find a skull hanging in the rear of the cage,( I often place "Seargro" in the brain cavity ) or a cluster of small white feathers works well, and then you need something like a catnip extract or Peter Schneekluth's scents to stop him and make him interested. I always place a mixture of male and female urine inside the cage and at the entrance, ( Don't mix them ) your house cats' scat sand also works, but not as well. I keep saying him because you will catch up to 80% males in cages. I do find that an electronic squeaker in the cage also works well. Cover the cage with fresh vegetation cut elsewhere, and place your cages and or traps in or against covered walks or paths like overgrown slote, or gully's coming to or from troughs or fountains. Cats like hilly, rocky areas here in the Karroo, it should be no different your way.
For both cats and jackals, practice on your dogs or house cats, just don't set the traps for them, your wife may take exception, but if they stop and investigate, or enter the cages, you are on the right track,
Older jackal are more difficult to trap than youngsters, they did not get old by being stupid, but Meercats method works very well.
Think of how a jackal operates, and you will increase your chances dramatically. Assess the jackal groups 70% area and concentrate your efforts there. Try to set off footpaths, tweespoor roads, paths that intersect or cross are also a good place, and you will do very well between 20 and 100m from permanent water. Always set away from the path, 12 to 24 inches, and set against bushes (Your attractant) that are not normally grazed by your stock. Any place that a jackal leaves dung on a bush, or where your dog HAS to stop and lift his leg is a good place. My main attractant for jackal is urine drawn from the jackal I shoot. I will use male to start, and every 4 - 5 days alternate on the Judas bush between male & female, I squirt 1 mil undiluted urine on the bush every time.
If you are like me, who always takes his dogs to the veld, then don't worry too much about your scent in the trap area, I have found jackal spoor that have followed our spoor for hundreds of yards the next night, and have also marked the bushes that my dogs have marked, I have even seen that they spray where I have taken a leak.
I set my traps, and then just leave them for about a week to 10 days, then I will go and scent bait them, and it works well, you can scent bait immediately after any rain. Your pan should be set to a minimum of 2 kg, I set mine to 2.5. Porcupine are for some reason curious about jackal trap sets, and you will occasionally catch a few.
After callers post about collecting scat from shot jackal, I tried it, and set some fresh unfrozen female scat on a trap that had not caught for a few weeks, that same night I caught a young male.
As for the rust on traps, I don't worry about it, I lubrlcate all pivot points with clear petroleum jelly after boiling them in Pentsia or Kapokbos stews, and have had no problems as yet.
I would also be very interested in comment from forum members.
Good luck, and remember Gary Players' motto, the more I practice, the luckier I get'
Cheers,
Graham

Graham,
Thank you for your detailed informative reply. I appreciate it. I am convinced that if every small livestock farmer just had to use their slagysters and vanghokke they have, and set them the right way and place, we would make a considerable reduction in their numbers in a very short period.
Thanks again.

Let us hear from the other guys.
It seems we are the only three souties here on the forum, that is you and Britsman (besides myself of course)?

That is the correct attitude. Farmers must know their land and use the right equipment correct. It would seem there is not enough dedication in this regard among a considerable section of farmers? Granted, some say they do not have the time for this kind of activity, therefore they rely on specialists to solve their challenges (at a fee of course).

In our area the specialists are not available and most s/st farmers don't realize that their livelihood is at stake. We will all have to catch a quick wake up call.Ambessa wrote: Granted, some say they do not have the time for this kind of activity, therefore they rely on specialists to solve their challenges (at a fee of course).

Graham,
Do you use P.Snee's gin traps?
Have you modified them as Heinrich suggested in earlier posts?
How do you set the pan trip weight? I made a spring loaded plunger (looks like a bicycle pump)with .5kg settings marked on the plunger.

Re: Metode Nr 2 - Slagysters
Hi Brits,
Yes, I use Peters' traps, I unfortunately haven't read Heinrich's method yet, will have to try and find it.
I grind away the sides of the jaws to extend the opening, and then weld lugs on the risers to give a jaw spread gap of just under 1/2 an inch. I find that after smoothing the jaws, I get very little damage to the legs, but I lose very few to pull outs. I used to weld short pieces of flat iron on the inside of the jaws, and line then with rubber, but I lost too many to pullouts.
I use an ordinary fishing scale to set the pan tension, and I place the hook in the middle of the pan on the side to test the drop weight.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Graham

Re: Metode Nr 2 - Slagysters
Graham,
Here is part of Heinrich's post:

Reading the web site of the Maryland trappers ass. I noticed the following quote which is the opposite of old Bollies statement that his stance is in line with ALL wildlife management org.'s
Interesting? The WILDLIFE SOCIETY and the INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FISH AND WILDLIFE AGENCIES (IAFWA) are the largest international organizations representing professional wildlife conservation employees and governmental wildlife agencies. Both groups actively support and promote trapping and leghold (foothold) traps as invaluable management tools. Position statements by these organizations relative to trapping include the following excerpts:
The Wildlife Society
The policy of the Wildlife Society in regard to trapping is to: ?Support the use of regulated trapping for sustained harvest of some species of furbearers as an effective method for managing or studying furbearers, controlling damage caused by furbearers, and at times reducing the spread of harmful diseases, and for economic benefit, subsistence, and as a legitimate recreational activity? (2).
International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies
Resolution No.1 on Traps, Trapping And Furbearer Management states in part:
" WHEREAS, regulated trapping guided by responsible wildlife management principles is a safe, efficient, and necessary means of capturing individual animals without impairing the survival of furbearer populations or damaging the environment; and
" WHEREAS, lethal harvest or control techniques are not feasible or appropriate in all situations and
"WHEREAS, live restraining traps often offer advantages over other techniques in efficiency, safety to humans and domestic animals, release of non target animals and lack of adverse environmental effects? (3).

Ek sal my tiekie inbetaal, maar net my mening die.

Hallo mac21
Those are the things that must be redressed in our official systems. Why try and reinvent the wheel?
However, it is easier said than done. Somehow we want to outdo (e.g. by creating more complex documents and less practical arrangements) other countries with much longer running (uninterupted!) official systems than SA.

Hi Brits,
I see you are online, saw your spread in the LBW, congrats, great idea.
How is your trapping onslaught going, I hope better than the last time I asked you. I am shooting in the Steynsburg area next month for 5 or 6 days, maybe we could arrange to meet somewhere, how far are you from there.
Cheers,
Graham

Hi Graham,
Thanks for the compliment.
I've managed to get some more cat wee and have moved the cages to more suitable (hopefully) spots.I have 2 traplines placed +-8 kms apart...... 6 cages in one and 4 in another. There are plenty R/cat spoors around so all they need to do is to step into a cage.
Steynsburg is 40min away so yes we can get together.
cheers,
