Which small calibre
A friend of mine wants to buy a small calibre rifle for informal target shooting and to be able to shoot guinea-fowl, geese and dassie-size game out to about 150m.
He does not reload his own ammo and it is highly unlikely he will ever do so.
He already owns some bigger calibre rifles: .270, 30-06 and 338 so the focus is entirely on a small calibre for the purpose described.
He is considering the .17hmr, 22WM and .22 hornet and asked my opinion. I told him I'd ask the experts as I don't own firearms in the category he is looking at.
I was going to suggest he also considers the .204 Ruger and .223 Remington
But what would the experts suggest and why? I'd appreciate your opinions.

Re: Which small calibre
223 Remington, availability and cost of ammo. Components are available and relatively cheap. He will also be able to shoot a springbuck, dassie, guinea-fowl and a goose from a bakkie or shooting sticks at 300m, no problem.

Re: Which small calibre
Few calibres can beat a can of milsurp .223 ammunition when it comes to price.
For plinking and varminting out to 150m the accuracy should be good enough.

.222 Rem.
I prefer the 222Rem to the 223Rem. Nothing against the 223!
The 222 is just soooo easy to shoot.
If your friend considers a 222 Rem there is a few shops with a special in the Tikka Super Varmint at the moment.

Have to agree with Mellies. It feels like shooting a .22 just the bang is louder.

A bit off the topic... I've read that Remington has filed for bankruptcy last week.

Thanks for your advice guys.
Geno, I know you have a lot of culling and varminting experience. You seem to favour the slightly lighter calibres. What advantage might they have over the .222/.223?

Less recoil (yes the .22cals have very little, but I am talking ZERO recoil)
guinea-fowl, geese and dassie-size game out to about 150m. is what the .17 and .20cals excel at. They are massive fun to shoot.
The .17Hornet equals the .223 with drop and wind.
.204Ruger equals .22-250 with drop and wind.
We use the .17Hornet to cull impala on plots and the .204 to shoot anything really. I've even killed a black wildebeest bull with mine...
We've also sucessfully killed a few impala with the .17HMR up to about 80m. But with guineafowl, dassie etc. it is great.
Ammo prices are as follows:
.17Hornet R365/25
.17HMR R270/50
.204Ruger R410/20
He can then sell the once fired .17Hornet and .204Ruger brass. There are plenty guys willing to buy it.
Goed, beter, 6millimeter!

Re: Which small calibre
Just because I have one I will also go for the 204 Ruger if he can get the varmint model and a nice suppresor mine sounds softer than a .22 without silencer. I have also seen some traders doing specials on ammo in the 204. Oh and btw the round is just sexy a longer super model than the .223 with high heels.

Geno wrote:.204 as jy binne 300m gaan bly.
