Pristine rivers/streams close to Middelburg Mpumalanga

Hi guys,

I have had this real strong urge since I started fly fishing 15 years ago, to fish a pristine stretch of a river or stream like you capetonians have. Sadly due to the state of our rivers and streams in my area (Middelburg), this urge or lets call it a dream has never materialized.

I long to fish a stretch of a river or stream, using dry flies (cause thats the dream).

So this thread has a dual purpose:

1. To find out of possible rivers and streams to fish in that is healthy.

2. To get contact details of land owner and/or a fishing buddy to tag along with.

Now the species to target do not matter, what matters most is the soul cleansing scenery in which these species live. Be it yellows, browns or rainbows even bass as long as you can get your feet wet wading (read hunting) to get within casting range.

See it's all about the pursuit, it's the journey that counts. I no longer feel the need to catch xxxx amout of fish, but rather to enjoy the quality of nature with the fishing being a bonus.

Cheers
George

Good day George

There is a farmer with the name of Dirk Uys, on the Olifantsriver that has the stretch south of the N4. He farms Afrikaner Longhorns so I think you will be able to get hold of him - he is difficult though. The Olifants was incorrectly stocked by Fauna and Flora with smallmouth yellows in the 80's and the result is large fish right up to the Witbank Dam. These fish spook easily, but stalking them is great fun. Use any smallmouth pattern in the river and DDD's and Caddis on the dam itself.

The tailwater of the Bronkhortsspruit Dam as some excellent smallscale yellow fishing. Speak to Dept water Affairs to get access from the eastern side of the dam wall, where the water marshal stays. Use atomic worms, flashback nymphs and PTN's for good results.

The Wilgeriver also has some good yellows, but the water is merky most of the time. Take the Wilgeriver offramp from the N4 and with a bottle of Bells, I think you van secure quite good spots for yourself in future.

Regards

Dawie
