Newbie

Post by Russoc3 »

Hi Everyone

My name is Carl Russouw. I grew up in OFS where I used to join my dad on hunting trips from a early age. My dad used to shoot for Cavisco (think thats the spelling) in the 90's.

I currently own a 7x57 Mauser that used to belong to my great grandfather and a CZ .223 that my dad used when culling.

I am currently waiting for my CZ .270 license.

I hope to learning a lot from everyone

Thanks

Hi Carl. Welcome. You will enjoy it here. If your family is from the Free State, and the 7x57 belonged to your great grandfather, I am tempted to think this rifle might be a Boer War 7x57 Mauser? Maybe even the so called Plezier Mausers?

Those Cavisco guys did a lot of shooting, do you think your 223's barrel is still in good shape?

Hi James

Funny you ask as the other day I was thinking the same thing. Had the barrel checked out and all is still good. Think it probably comes down to not running the bullet at extreme speeds through the barrel.

The 7x57 was used by my great grandfather in hunting trips in Africa. Still have old Kynoch solid point ammunition of his that he used. Gun originally had an old peep sight on but my dad had Musgrave (when factory was still in Bloem) converted to hold a scope. Think Ben Musgrave was one that did conversion. Barrel is also a lot shorter than my other guns and the bolt has a flattened spoon like design from the usual ball at the end. Will try load up some pics as i am trying to find more info on this rifle. Still shoots like a dream 80 years later
