Hi Guys,
Has anybody had/have any experience with loading the GS Custom 177 gn HV's and 300wm's?
Regarding accuracy at long distances.
Regards,
Craig

Craig,
The standard twist rate in 300WM rifles is 1:10".
This is what GSC says about the suitable rifle to use the 308177HV bullet:
A twist rate of 1:8.5" should render a SF of 1.6+, which will make the specific length of bullet referred to, suitable for distances closer than 500m under most conditions.

Accuracy beyond 500m should be good with the 1:9" twist.Suitable for Calibres
308177HV198 - We suggest that this bullet be used for hunting beyond 500m. It can be used in 1:9" twist for closer than 500m. Conditions can cause variations in this recommendation, but we give it as a general guide to application.

Re: GS Custom 177HV's and 300Wm
Hi Koos,
Thanks for this.
I have checked the GSC site and according to the the 177 gn table.
The 1 in 10 twist that most 300wm's have will give the bullet a 1.25 stability factor.
This should make it ideal for beyond 500m
But, when you go to the load data tables in the GSC site, it does not give you any info on the 177.
The highest that it gives load data to is 160.
I will be giving the GSC helpline a call to inquire about this tomorrow.
Just want to know from the guys on the forum if they have had any experience with this particular load.

Hello Craig,
Any specific reason, other than hunting beyond 500m, why you are interested in using the 177gr HV bullet?
Regards,
Koos.

Re: GS Custom 177HV's and 300Wm
I'm playing with ideas.... essentially.
I am looking for a bullet for the 300wm that can full fill the following:
1. High BC
2. High velocity
3. Weight retention - hence mono metal.
4. A low expansion speed.
5. long range
A pipe dream?

Craig, bear two things in mind -
1. If your 300WM has a twist of 1:10" - long range hunting is what you will be able to do as recommended -
Most hunts take place far under 500m distances.
Still, what you're dreaming about, is quite possible!

Koos.

2. Only if your 300WM has a twist of 1:9", the following is recommended, with a specific part attached to it - see underlined portion -308177HV198 - We suggest that this bullet be used for hunting beyond 500m.
As mentioned, a 1:8.5" twist would be more acceptable for hunts closer than 500m with that specific bullet. It can be used in 1:9" twist for closer than 500m. Conditions can cause variations in this recommendation, but we give it as a general guide to application.
