85 jackals in two nights

Hi guys,

In Geno's recent updates of the Problem Animal Register 2020 (http://jaracal.com/viewtopic.php?f=189&p=831039#p831039) he recorded shooting 50 jackals on one night and then 35 jackals on another night. I'm shocked - 85 jackals in just two nights!

Those numbers seem unusually high and it makes me curious.

1. Are those unusually high numbers?
2. Which area of the country was that in?
3. Are these mainly pups being shot? And at what age do pups start responding to calls?

I assume that the jackal population is so high in those areas because:
a) There is an abundant food source. Q: Is that food source mainly natural prey, mainly livestock or is it 50/50, or does it depend on time of year?
b) There is good habitat
c) There is a lack of larger predators that could keep the jackals in check. Q: Which predator is most important wrt keeping jackals in check?

I'm finding the dynamics of this very interesting. If some of the experts would share their wisdom wrt the above it will be much appreciated and an opportunity for me, and others, to learn.
