Scope - Savage Model 12 Varminter

Post by LLTHB »

Hello to all.

Advice needed please.

Budget of R20 to R25k.

Scope needed for a Savage Model 12 in .260Rem caliber. The rifle is a Varminter Low Profile with a 26" barrel.

Planning to use the rifle for long range shooting and hunting to 300m.

Please recommend a scope.

Thank you.

Deel jou kennis dan bevorder jy jou sport.

Personally I would go for the PST mainly because of the Tactical/Exposed turrets. Don't know if you like FFP? Otherwise Khales is a very high quality scope as
well.

This Leupold is also an option.

Thanks guys.

Ok, so you are saying that your eye is the main determining factor and how you see through the scope.

Let me clarify if I may:

Are scopes not "matched" to caliber and to distance and to application?
Can one buy a scope for all calibers or should one match the scope?
The rifle will be used for hunting to 250m to 300m as its primary purpose, secondary will be range shooting for fun.

Or do you simply just choose the scope that the eye sees through the best?

Appreciate all the input.

Well i think the principle is you cant shoot what you cant see, therefore optical clarity is high on the list of attributes of a good scope ,and because evaluating optical clarity is subjective it is important to look through the scope and evaluate it for yourself. That is easier said than done as most optic retailers are not equipped to allow you to hold the scope steady enough to get a good picture of what the optic is capable of ,especially at high magnification .Magnification range and objective and tube size are features to consider.
Then there are other features to consider of which mechanical repeatably of adjustments and build quality are important, the retikule(duplex ,bdc ,milldot, moa ect)are more application specific .

My advise would be dont buy the first and best scope (according the sales person)you run into.

I feel like im reading my own post. I just went rough exactly the same exercise with my savage mod12 .243 vlp for long range shooting. I spent many many man hours reading up and comparing scopes in the shops. Made a spreadsheet with pros and cons. The whole tutie. In the end i bought a bushnell tactical elite 6-24x50 ffp with the g2dmr reticle. Very happy with the purchase!
