Hunting on your own property

What are the regulations with hunting on your own property if it is not registered as a hunting farm?

The provincial hunting proclamations are available on the SA Hunters website.

During hunting season the land owner can shoot certain game without a permit.

Hunting will be walk and stalk with a licensed firearm. Animals on the farm include zebra, kudu, nyala and blue wildebeest amongst others

Check that proclamation as duiker, bushbuck and impala are ordinary game, but in KZN funnily enough kudu, zebra, BWB and Nyala are protected game and need a permit regardless.

All the above are protected game. They remain the property of the owner, but fall under the protection of the Nature Conservation Ordinance.

The owner, his direct family or a specified employee may harvest them, given he has purchased the ordinary game permits for the individual animals, as is the case in KZN. He may also not make use of any so called prohibited hunting methods, for eg. the use of a light, or from a vehicle, which he would have been exempt from, had the farm been fenced and registered in accordance with the KZN NCO.

Of course he may not exceed the daily limit of the game. If he wishes to hunt during the closed season - this is area dependend as per the hunting proclamation - he needs to apply for a Spesial Game Licence to do so

Dewald is correct that the kudu is protected and I have rectified my post. Blesbuck and springbuck are open game and can be shot by the owner any time of the year.

As die grondeienaar die vleis vervoer is daar ander aspekte wat ook 'n rol speel. Eerstens moet die eienaar 'n bewys kan lewer dat die grond aan hom behoort, soos 'n bv afskrif van die titelakte. Indien die eiendom in 'n CC, Trust of Maatskappy is, moet 'n afskrif van die resolusie/besluit die bewys van eiendom vergesél. Indien dit 'n vrygestelde plaas is moet 'n afskrif van die vrysstellingspermit, tesame met die gelysde wild daarop ook die bewyse vergesél. Permitte vir diere wat in die Ordonansie gespesifiseer word moet in die voertuig gehou word. 'n Varkpermit moet ook deur 'n grondeienaar byderhand gehou word vir elke varkkarkas wat vervoer word.
