Hi from across the ocean.

Post by AfricaAmerica »

My name is Gideon and I live in Omaha Nebraska in the United States. After being gone for 21 years I find it difficult to write in Afrikaans, but have no problem reading or speaking it. I am an avid hunter, F-Class competition shooter and do some reloading and amateur gunsmithing on the side.

Looking forward to meet new friends and learn new things. Hopefully I will be able to return the favor.
Skryf asseblief in Afrikaans.

Groete,

Thank you for the replay. Nebraska is the furthest state East in the USA that has both Mule Deer and White Tail Deer. So I always start my hunting season with a Mule Deer hunt and as it gets colder I stick with White Tail, Mule Deer stay at higher elevations and harsher conditions than White Tail. I have been fortunate to hunt from both the Mexican border to the Canadian border and have hunted Wild Boar, Javelina and the occasional Coyote.
As for my rifles:
.22 CZ
243 Win – Custom target rifle based on Remington 700 action
270 Win – Remington 700 CDL
270 Win – Cooper Jackson Game
270 Win – In the process of building based on a Remington 700 action
280 AI – Husqvarna action with aftermarket barrel
280 AI – Cooper Jackson Game
300 Win – Remington 700 LSS
.50 – Savage ML 10 II
12 gauage – Remington 870
357 Mag – Taurus
And a couple more…

Peet,

So I can still write in Afrikaans, it is just cumbersome.

Baie welkom Gideon,

I have added three pictures of the public land that I hunt on in Nebraska. We are very fortunate that there is a lot of publicly owned land that we are allowed to hunt on where we do not have to pay for the right to do so. Unfortunately the hunting pressure on these lands is great and you are not allowed to take any vehicles on it. So whatever animals you take down you have to carry and or drag out yourself. The Black Hills is in the northeastern part of the state at an elevation of a mile high, this does cause drastic changes in temperature and snowfall during the Deer hunting season. I have hunted here at -20 degrees in a foot of snow. The Sand Hills is in the central part of the state with wide-open spaces and nothing to stop the cold Artic air. During our rifle season, which is in the middle part of November, the wind-chill factor is normally in the low negative numbers. The eastern part of the state has a lot more trees and this is where I do my "late" season hunting in January.

Some statistics: The population of Nebraska is about 1.5 million people. Deer harvest reported in 2010 and 2011 were about 88 000. It dropped severely in 2012 due to drought and disease among the White Tail and Mule Deer. The state is about 550 miles (880 km) East to West and about 240 miles (384 km) North to South. Only three towns have a population of more than 50 000 people, with Omaha having the most at 400 000.

Hallo Gideon

Welkom hier. Glo ons gaan baie by mekaar kan leer.

Dit wys my, julle is Boere in murg en been.

Groete

Hi Gideon,Baie welkom hier.

Win270,

I am eager to hear more about "Oom Pine" at some later time. The price of rifles and ammunition has rized dramattically in the past two years, but it is very difficult to compare prices in US dollar vs SA rand. No matter how you look at it hunting and shooting is the gift that keeps on giving, it is not cheap. I dampen this by stockpiling all rloading components, since we don't have restrictions on the amount we can buy. I will post some pictues of soke of my rifles in the future. I just don't have a good enough camera for quality closeups.

spekieries,

You are correct about your observation that I love the 270 Winchester and Cooper rifles. I have owned four Coopers in my life and think they are unequaled in craftsmanship for the price. As for the 270, I think if you can have only one rifle for antelope hunting the 270 can do it all and at a very manageable level of recoil.

Cheers
